A Labor Day holiday weekend turned into a tragedy as at least 11 people were killed and 31 others injured when a tourist bus overturned in Mexicoโs western state of Nayarit on May 1, 2026.
According to reports from Reuters, authorities stated that the bus was traveling from Jalisco toward a recreational destination when it veered off the highway and flipped near the town of Amatlรกn de Caรฑas.

Emergency crews from both Nayarit and Jalisco responded immediately, closing the road to conduct rescue operations and launch an investigation. Photos released by officials showed the vehicle lying on its side, heavily damaged and covered in mud.
Deadly bus crashes remain a significant concern in Mexico, where buses are the primary mode of long-distance transportation. This incident follows other recent tragedies, including a major collision in early 2025 that claimed over 40 lives.
In response to ongoing safety risks, the government, led by President Claudia Sheinbaum, is currently working to expand the countryโs passenger rail network to improve transportation safety and reduce reliance on highway travel.
