Essex, United Kingdom β July 1, 2026 β Two people have died after a light aircraft crashed into a field near Ongar, Essex, during what authorities described as a short flight experience.
According to Essex Police, the two-seat Cessna aircraft took off from North Weald Airfield before crashing in a field off Mill Lane at around 12:30 p.m. local time on Tuesday. Emergency services responded quickly to the scene, but both occupants were pronounced dead. Their identities have not yet been officially released.
Detective Chief Superintendent Morgan Cronin said the aircraft was expected to complete only a brief flight before the accident occurred.
“Our priority is to determine exactly what happened and provide the victims’ families with the answers they deserve,” Cronin said. He added that specially trained officers are supporting the families during this difficult time.

Investigators from the UK’s Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) have launched a full investigation into the crash. A multidisciplinary team, including specialists in engineering, flight operations, and human factors, has been deployed to examine the wreckage and gather evidence.
The AAIB emphasized that it is too early to determine the cause of the accident, and investigators will conduct a thorough examination before reaching any conclusions.
Essex Police are continuing to work alongside the AAIB, local fire and rescue services, North Weald Airfield, and Epping Forest District Council to establish the circumstances surrounding the crash. Officers are also interviewing witnesses and reviewing any available footage from the scene.
Authorities have appealed to anyone who witnessed the incident or has relevant video evidence to contact Essex Police as the investigation continues.
