What Your Earwax May Reveal About Your Ear Health

Your earwax can provide some clues about ear health, but its color alone cannot reveal your overall health.

Earwax, or cerumen, naturally protects the ear canal by trapping dust and helping prevent irritation and infection.

What the Color May Mean

๐ŸŸก Yellow/light: Usually fresh and normal earwax.
๐ŸŸ  Orange/brown: Often normal as earwax becomes older.
๐ŸŸค Dark brown: Usually older, accumulated earwaxโ€”not necessarily poor hygiene.
โšซ Black: May indicate significant buildup, especially if you have hearing loss or a blocked feeling.
๐ŸŸข Green/unusual discharge: May be linked to an ear infection, particularly with pain, odor, or fluid.

When Should You Be Concerned?

See a healthcare professional if you experience ear pain, hearing loss, dizziness, persistent ringing, foul-smelling discharge, or fluid/pus from the ear.

Also, avoid pushing cotton swabs deep into your ears because they can push wax farther inside or injure the ear.

Bottom line: Earwax color can naturally vary. Symptoms are more important than color when assessing ear health.
